The photo shows our 1986 winter production of Amahl and the Night Visitors. From left to right David Haeems as Amahl, Alan Rankin-Crooks – Kaspar (rather hidden, sadly), Paul Henley – the Page, Lawrence Reed – Balthazar and Richard Bacon as Melchior. Amahl was chosen not only because it’s a little gem of an opera, but because of its seasonal connections, so it seems very appropriate to display it now as our Festive offering in our Anniversary photo collection. We performed Amahl at St. Matthew’s Church, Redhill as a double bill with The Zoo, music by Sir Arthur Sullivan. Another delightful one act opera. David, one of our two Amahl’s, went on to play the role at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, directed by the composer himself – Gian Carlo Menotti.
