The Pearl Fishers

For its third visit to Minack, Surrey Opera is delighted to present an exciting new (but traditional) production of Bizet’s popular opera sung in English.
A tale of love, jealousy and redemption, The Pearl Fishers will transport you to an exotic land where the ancient gods still rule. Bizet’s atmospheric score plunges the listener into the story from the very first note.
In a fishing village in ancient Ceylon, two men reaffirm their friendship (in the famous duet “Within the sacred temple”) after rivalry for the same woman has almost destroyed them both. But then she comes back into their lives. Betrayal and desire are the rules, turning friend against friend, pushing them all towards a terrifying climax of violence and desire.
Surrey Opera is renowned both locally and nationally for the high standard of its productions. The combination of experienced principal singers and a dedicated amateur chorus gives the performances an excitement and spontaneity not always seen on the professional stage. Standards are kept consistently high by the Artistic Director, Jonathan Butcher, by an excellent orchestra and by young producers from the professional companies.
With its dramatic seashore background, temples and storms, The Pearl Fishers could have been tailor-made for Minack. It will be performed with full chorus and orchestra.
Don’t miss this opportunity of seeing opera performed in a perfect setting!
